There’s something about having a second baby that makes you…braver? Or maybe just more realistic. The second time around, you realize you don’t actually need half the stuff you bought (or panic-registered for) with your first.

With baby #1, I was fully prepared for anything. With baby #2, I was like… “we’ll figure it out.” And honestly? It worked just fine.

Here are a few things I happily ditched the second time around—and didn’t miss one bit:

1. The Diaper Pail
Listen, I wanted to love it. It looked sleek, promised odor control, and felt very “put together mom.” But in reality? It was just an overpriced trash can with special bags I constantly ran out of.

Second baby solution: a simple locking trash can + plastic grocery bags. Cheap, easy, and I can take the trash out daily without dealing with weird refills. Done.

2. The Baby Food Maker
With my first, I had big dreams of making organic, homemade purées every week. And for about…two weeks, I did.

Then life happened.

Second time around? I skipped the fancy machine completely. Between store-bought options and just mashing up whatever we were already eating, I didn’t miss it at all.

3. The “Donut” Pillow (Flat Head Preventer)
I was so worried about everything with my first baby—including head shape. I bought the special pillow, tried to use it consistently, and stressed about it way too much.

Second baby? I focused more on tummy time, holding baby, and just…living. No special pillow needed, no extra stress added.

4. Glass Bottles
In theory: eco-friendly, durable, great idea.
In reality: I somehow broke every single one with my first baby.

Second baby = plastic bottles all the way. Lightweight, less stress, and no fear every time one rolls off the counter.

The biggest thing I learned? You don’t need to overcomplicate it.

Babies really don’t care about fancy gear. They want to be fed, held, and loved—and everything else is just extra.

The second time around gave me permission to simplify, save money, and let go of the pressure to do everything “perfectly.”

And honestly, it made the whole experience way more enjoyable.

So now I’m curious—
what did you swap, ditch, or keep the second time around?
