At end of blog I will link the supplies to create your own plaster of Paris stepping stones.
Supplies
- Plaster of Paris
- Water
- Mixing bowl + spoon (disposable is easiest)
- Mold (cake pan, pie tin, or plastic container)
- Non-stick spray or a little oil
- Child’s hand or foot

- Decorations (optional):
- Small pebbles
- Shells
- Glass beads
- Dried flowers
- Toothpick or wooden skewer (for writing names/date)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep Your Mold
Lightly grease your pan or container so the stone pops out easily later.
2. Mix the Plaster
- Follow the package instructions (usually about 2 parts plaster to 1 part water)
- Stir until smooth—like pancake batter
- Work quickly—it starts setting fast (5–10 minutes!)
3. Pour the Base
Pour the mixture into your mold, about 1–2 inches thick.
4. Make the Impression
- Gently press your child’s hand or foot into the plaster
- Hold for a few seconds, then carefully lift
- If it smudges, you can smooth it out and try again quickly
5. Decorate
- Add stones, flowers, or beads around the imprint
- Use a toothpick to write:
- Name
- Date
- “Happy Mother’s Day”
6. Let It Set
- Allow to harden for 24 hours
- Once fully dry, remove from mold
7. Optional Finishing Touches
- Lightly sand rough edges
- Paint or seal with a clear acrylic spray for durability
- Add color to the imprint (soft pastels look beautiful!)
Tips for Success
- Do a “practice press” before using the plaster (especially with younger kids)
- If using a very young child, try doing it while they’re calm or distracted
- You can turn this into a hanging keepsake by adding a straw hole before it sets
